Renos: Investing Everything to Educate Kids in Zanzibar
Renos put his own money on the line — and then raised more — to build schools for underprivileged children in Zanzibar. This is his story.
When Money Stops Being the Point
Most founders we speak to are building toward wealth. Renos is building toward something else entirely: a Zanzibar where no child grows up unable to read, write, or speak English simply because they were born into the wrong circumstances.
In Season 2 Episode 2 of Dubai Stars, we sit down with Renos — the driving force behind Humanity Renos — to hear how a deep sense of purpose turned into a years-long mission to construct schools and change lives on the East African island of Zanzibar.
All In — Literally
What sets Renos apart from most philanthropists is the personal financial commitment he made before asking anyone else to contribute. He invested his own money first, then went out and raised more — not to build a business, not to generate a return, but to give children in Zanzibar access to a basic education.
That kind of conviction is rare. For Renos, the question of whether he could afford to do this was simply never the deciding factor. The question was always whether he could afford not to.
The Problem He Is Solving
Zanzibar, despite its beauty and tourism appeal, has communities where access to quality education remains severely limited. For many children there, learning to speak English — a skill that opens doors across the professional world — is not a given. It is a privilege reserved for those whose families can pay for it.
Renos saw that gap and decided to close it, one school at a time.
A Mission Built for the Long Run
This is not a short-term project or a one-off donation. Renos has spent years on the ground, and his stated goal is to set up as many schools as possible across Zanzibar. He is playing a long game — measured not in quarterly results, but in the number of children who graduate with skills they would never otherwise have had.
It is the kind of work that does not come with a clear finish line, and Renos seems entirely at peace with that.
Why This Story Matters
Dubai is home to founders and executives from every corner of the world, many of whom carry a sense of responsibility toward the communities they came from. Renos represents something those people will recognise immediately: the pull to do something that matters, even when — especially when — it costs you.
